NFA Leadership
Level I January 13 (6pm-10pm); January 14 (8:30pm-5:30pm) This class will give students basic skills and tools needed to perform effectively as a leader in the fire service. Students will learn techniques and approaches to problem solving; identify and assess the needs of the company officer; run meetings effectively in the fire service environment; and learn decision making for the company officer.
Level II January 27 (6pm-10pm); January 28 (8:30pm-5:30pm) This class teaches basic leadership and tools needed to perform effectively in the fire service environment including: ethics, use and abuse of power at the officer level; creativity in the fire service environment; and management of the multiple roles of a company officer. Class is targeted for training officers, fire or rescue personnel due for promotion, line fire officers, unit commanders, or program supervisors seeking a promotion.
Level III February 17 (6pm-10pm); February 18 (8:30pm-5:30pm) This class will teach basic leadership skills and tools geared toward the company officer to perform effectively in the fire service environment. Students will learn when and how to delegate to subordinates, assess personal leadership styles through situational leadership, discipline subordinates, and apply coaching/motivating techniques.

Chief 101 — This class will offer some insight into paperwork and other issues facing today’s fire departments. There will be a heavy emphasis on benefits from the State Firemen’s Association, the Firemen’s and Rescue Squad Worker’s Pension Fund, the PSOB, Worker’s Compensation and the State of NC. This class is designed to be beneficial to all firefighters.

Fire Officer I — This course meets the objectives in Chapter 4 of NFPA 1021 and covers the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to serve as an entry-level fire department company officer. Topics include making the transition to officer; fire prevention; investigation; strategies and tactics; leadership; conflict resolution; community involvement; and communication.

TR Wilderness Rescue — This course will present the Technical Rescuer with the knowledge, skills, and ability to satisfy the requirements of Chapter Sixteen (Wilderness) of NFPA 1006: Standard for Technical Rescue Professional Qualifications. Classes included in the course are: Rescue Operations for Wilderness, Rescue Rigging, Navigation, Tracking, and Victim Management.

Hazardous Materials Level One Responder — This course meets OSFM’s training requirement for the Hazardous Materials Level One Responder credential. Course content includes lecture and practice activities needed to perform the following tasks safely and effectively. (1) Implement standard operation procedures in the current edition of the DOT Emergency Response Guidebook. (2) Analyze a hazardous materials/WMD incident. (3) Plan an initial response to a hazardous materials/SMD incident. (4) Implement the planned response for a hazardous materials/WMD incident. (5) Evaluate the progress of actions taken at a hazardous materials/WMD incident.

NC TR Technical Ropes Rescue Technician with added Basic High Angle Medical Specialist — This course is designed to meet and exceed the NC requirements for TR Rope Rescue with a heavy focus on the medical injuries that occur in the high-angle environment and their treatments. ASSESSMENT CENTER CLASS — The purpose of the Assessment Center course is to familiarize personnel with the understanding and process of an Assessment Center, and use the information learned to better prepare for the promotion process. Items covered will be:
First Day (1) History of assessment centers; (2) Overview of assessment centers; (3) Purpose of assessment centers; (4) Different approaches to assessment centers; (5) Definition of dimensions; (6) Dimensions used in Emergency Service Assessment Centers; (7) How dimensions are rated; (8) How to prepare for an Assessment Center; (9) What to do before the assessment center, during the assessment center, and after the assessment center.
Second Day-Oral Interviews — Students will participate in an actual assessment center process using actual assessors and rating forms. Depending on number of students, this session may have an evening session.
Third Day-In Basket and Oral Interview Reviews — The morning of the third day will be used to complete the student participation in a IN-Basket process, and the rest of the day is to critique the process and to meet with each student individually and review their score and comments of the Oral Interview. Fire Instructor I and II / Educational Methodology for Fire, Rescue, and EMS — This course is designed to train fire and emergency instructor candidates in learning and practicing the art of: (1) developing instructional strategies/techniques; (2) and demonstrating practical generic teaching and communications skills. Participants will prepare and deliver lesson presentations on a non-EMS or Fire related topic and a topic specific to the content area in which he or she will be teaching. The focus will be on responding to learner needs while meeting ethical/professional/safety standards and legal responsibilities.

Advanced High Angle Medical Specialist —This course builds on the skills taught in our basic course with additional instruction in advanced physiologies. During the 5-day course, students will participate in various real world technical rescue exercises where all aspects of patient care will be addressed. Airport Firefighter — This is a voluntary State of North Caroline Fire Service Certification program. The program is divided in to three major duties as established by NFPA 1003 Airport Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications. These duties are response, fire suppression, and rescue. These three duties are presented in eleven lessons to better instruct the candidate in aviation fire protection. For complete certification the candidate must also successfully complete the North Carolina Fire Fighter II Certification program.

Summer Firefighter Academy 2012 — The purpose of this Academy is to produce high quality firefighters who will strengthen the ability of fire protection service in order to provide a higher degree of customer service. A mandatory orientation will be held June 10 at 2pm. Classes will begin June 11 at 8am and run Monday-Friday. A complete schedule will be provided at the orientation. The Academy will end August 10 with a graduation ceremony. Topics covered will be Firefighter I and II courses; Hazardous Materials; Rapid Intervention Team Certification; Physical Training; and Live Fire Scenarios. Candidates must complete an application packet to be accepted into the Academy. There are a limited number of seats and NO walk-ins will be accepted. A few local fire departments have agreed to allow candidates to be housed at fire stations. A $175 non-refundable fee is required for student supplies including textbooks, uniforms, and other supplies. The fee is not due until acceptance into the Academy.
