Registration Information for EMT-Basic, EMT-Intermediate, and EMT-Paramedic — Please note registration dates for all classes. Registration days are Monday thru Thursday from 8 am – 4 pm. If you need to register on Friday, please call to schedule a time to come in. The pre-requisites for EMT Basic are high school diploma or GED, or at least 17 years of age (and attending high school). If you are under 18 you are required to have a current Dual Enrollment form signed by your high school principal. Registration location is the Brown Emergency Training Center, 2423 Kings Road Ext., Shelby, NC 28152. AHA Healthcare Provider (CPR)
In this classroom-based course, healthcare professionals learn to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR to victims of all ages, use an AED, and relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner. Students must arrive at class with the AHA Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers Student Text. The text is available for purchase in the College Bookstore. Students will not be admitted without the student text! NC Fire/Rescue/EMS personnel are fee exempt for this course. Students wanting to claim the fee exemption should bring a letter to the class from the Chief or Training Officer of their department which shows affiliation with that particular department, as well as documented need of class for job classification. Students who have an affiliation with a fire department or EMS agency in North Carolina are fee exempt for registration. Students wanting to claim fee exemption should bring a letter to the class from the Chief or Training Officer of their department stating affiliation, as well as documented need of the class as part of their functional job description. International Trauma Life Support – Advanced Provider This course gives students the knowledge and hands-on skills to take better care of trauma patients. The ITLS framework is a global standard that enables students to master the latest techniques in rapid assessment, appropriate intervention and identification of life-threatening injuries. Students who have an affiliation with a fire department or EMS agency in North Carolina are fee exempt for registration. Students wanting to claim fee exemption should bring a letter to the class from the Chief or Training Officer of their department stating affiliation, as well as documented need of the class as part of their functional job description. You must currently be certified as an EMT-Intermediate or EMT-Paramedic to attend this course.
Advanced Medical Life Support Class Prerequsites: Students must come to class with a current AMLS Text; these are available for purchase in the College Bookstore. AMLS is the most comprehensive EMS continuing education course addressing the assessment and management of patients. It is for all levels of practitioners with a strong commitment to patient care, including first responders, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurse anesthetists and physicians. The course emphasizes the use of scene size-up, history, interactive group discussion on potential treatment strategies, and physical exam to systematically rule out and consider possibilities and probabilities in treating patients’ medical crises. The course offers an initial assessment-based approach that progress to a diagnostic-based approach to quickly develop the best treatment plan. January 14 & 15 0900-1730. PEPP Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professionals Course Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professionals (PEPP) represents a complete source of prehospital medical information for the emergent care of infants and children. Developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics, PEPP is an exciting curriculum designed specifically to teach prehospital professionals how to better assess and manage ill or injured children. EMT-Basic Day Course (Rookie Class) M-F 0800- (Various end times, usually 17:30) Class starts: March 19th & ends April 20th, 2012. Registration Fee: $175 This course introduces basic emergency medical care. Topics include preparatory, airway, patient assessment, medical emergencies, trauma, infants and children, and operations. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve North Carolina State or National Registry EMT-Basic certification. Students must complete a reading placement test the first night of class. Student prerequisites: High school diploma or GED and successful completion of reading exam at 10th grade level. If student is under 18 years of age, he/she must be attending high school and provide a Cleveland Community College Dual Enrollment form stating the high school he/she is attending and courses taken.
Anatomy & Physiology (EMS 3000) M/Th Day Class 0900-1730 Class starts 04/30/2012 and ends 05/31/2012.
Registration Fee: $175
This course provides a basic study of the structure and function of the human body. Topics include a basic study of the body systems as well as an introduction to homeostasis, cells, tissues, nutrition, acid-base balance, and electrolytes. 80 hours. This class meets the Anatomy & Physiology requirement for entry into EMT-P classes as pre or co-requisite. Instructor: Glynn Lookabill.
EMT-Basic to Paramedic Course M/Th Day Class 0900-1730 Class starts 06/04/2012 and ends 05/30/2013
Registration Fee: $175 (Additional fees will apply to clinical for this class.)
This course builds upon skills and assessments learned in the EMT-Basic course, and transitions students to be able to provide advanced level care. Topics include, but are not limited to, anatomy and physiology; advanced airway management; IV therapy and emergency drug therapy; cardiolog;, EKG interpretation; and medical and trauma patient assessment. Students will have vast opportunities for hands on experience in the clinical setting. Student prerequisites: currently certified as EMT-Basic (NC or National Registry); possess a high school diploma or GED; pass an entrance exam assessing reading and math skills (must be 12-grade level); and Anatomy and Physiology. A course in Anatomy Physiology will be offered 04/30/2012 thru 05/31/2012 for those students who have not had the course. Students who have an affiliation with a fire department or EMS agency in North Carolina are fee exempt for registration.
Co-requisites: Students must complete a college level Anatomy & Physiology or a Continuing Education Anatomy & Physiology (EMS 3000) prior to course completion.
